Rat Lab Tools Tier List
Session gear ranked for capture, escape, mutation work, and survival — unlocks reset each join.
This Tools Tier List ranks the signature Rat Lab kit pieces players search for most: bite, net, baton, taser, guns, sniper, mutation gun, hazmat, armour, and traps. Grades assume you can unlock the tool in the current session — remember session tool unlocks reset each join. For role-level grades see Roles; for unlock cadence see Tools & Unlocks; for the overview see the Tier List Hub.
We also call out the vest (+50 HP) as a special survivability pickup even when it is not a “weapon.” If your tier list ignores HP buffers, your baton trades will lie to you.
Tier definitions
- S — Take whenever the role and map state allow; wins rounds on its own merit.
- A — Excellent in the right hands or stages; slightly narrower than S.
- B — Solid filler or situational specialize.
- C — Weak alone, outdated after a patch, or high miss cost for new players.
Patches since launch (30 July 2026) and mid-September Forever / Mutation Codes pass updates can nudge these letters — verify on Updates.

Exact letters shift by goal below.
By goal
Escape-focused (Lab Rat lens)
- S — Vest, Bite — Survive the hit, create the peel, finish stages (How to Escape, Lab Rats).
- A — Armour (if contestable), mobility knowledge vs traps — Knowing trap lines is as valuable as holding a trap item.
- B — Stolen / opportunistic guns — Rarely your identity; do not derail stage two for a vanity pickup.
- C — Standing still to “test” Mutation Index colours — Colours are statuses, not codes.
PvP / lockdown (Security lens)
- S — Net — Without nets, rats win tempo (Security).
- A — Taser, Baton, Traps — The confirm package and route control.
- A / B — Guns — Rise to A on long sightlines; fall if the map is vent-heavy.
- B — Sniper — Punishing and stylish; lower if you neglect objectives.
- A — Armour — Lets you win post-net melees against vested rats.
Science-focused (Scientist lens)
- S / A — Mutation gun — Your job tool (Scientists, Mutations).
- A — Hazmat when wings are unsafe; otherwise B.
- A — Armour against bite rushes.
- B — Guns / sniper — Emergency defense, not identity.
- Support — Traps & Security nets — You rarely out-capture a dedicated guard; coordinate instead (Security Guide).
Fun chaos
Bite + net misses + sniper ego clips will always look S on YouTube. For actual fun that does not end the session in ten seconds, mix one serious survivability pick (vest / armour / hazmat) into your meme kit.
Tool notes
Bite
Best rat answer to greedy scientists and overextended baton swings. Telegraphed bites into dual Security are free deaths. Tier stays S because escape games need a personal agency tool.
Net
Highest leverage Security item for public lobbies. Lead moving targets. Follow up — a net without baton / taser follow-through wastes the window.
Baton
Excels in doors and after CC. Low tier in open sniper lanes where rats kite you.
Taser
Spend on high-threat rats still holding bite, not on already trapped low-HP targets.
Guns
Workhorse ranged layer. Friendly fire near mutation experiments can throw science rounds — call shots.
Sniper
Teaches patience. One revealed angle becomes useless; relocate after the first miss. Great for stage-three overlooks, poor as your only plan.
Mutation gun
Science identity. Ammo discipline beats spray. Pair with Index colour literacy; never sell colours as promo codes.
Hazmat
Situational S-tier when the lab is hostile; inventory clutter when it is not. Learn wing states after each patch.
Armour
Quiet A-tier. Stacks with vest math knowledge even if you are not the rat who picked the vest.
Traps
Force rats onto known lines. Place on alternates, not only the obvious hallway everyone already watches.
Loadout building under session resets
Because unlocks reset each join:
- Decide your goal before spawn (escape / capture / science).
- Rush the S-tier tool for that goal first.
- Add one survivability piece (vest / armour / hazmat).
- Only then greed sniper or luxury guns.
- If you die early, do not tilt-requeue without learning which tool you lacked — reread Tools & Unlocks.

Use this list to prioritize, not to flame teammates holding a B pick. A baton in the correct doorway beats a sniper on the wrong roof every time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Rat Lab players.
Why is the vest listed with tools?
The +50 HP vest changes every trade involving bite, baton, taser, and guns. Ignoring it makes weapon tiers misleading.
Why isn’t sniper S tier?
Sniper is strong on specific overlooks but misses objective control. Nets, confirms, and traps win more average rounds.
Do unlocks persist if I favourite the game?
No. Session tool unlocks still reset each join regardless of favourites or most passes.
Where do I learn unlock order?
See the Tools & Unlocks guide and role pages for Lab Rats, Scientists, and Security.
